That’s My Brand – OJ’s Cereal (1980s)

Jun 15, 2020 ·

The “combine it, just combine everything, who cares” mentality of the ’80s is demonstrated here in this aggressive attempt to combine as many parts of the traditional balanced breakfast into as few individual items as possible.

OJ’s Cereal is mascoted by the lazily named OJ Joe, a cowboy who wrangles oranges, brands them, and delivers them to Kellogg’s for slaughter. It’s a lazy name for a mascot, appropriate for a lazy ad that leans into a television-western opening theme song and doesn’t do much else.

An orange tasting cereal that was “packed with Vitamin C”, potentially replacing that pesky glass of orange juice taking up space on your placemat. I can’t imagine how this tasted; creamsicle at best?

Not surprisingly, OJ’s didn’t last long. The 1994 Bronco chase lasted longer. Too soon?
